P41-1 Road upgrade to improve traffic capacity
Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport, Ismail Vadi officially unveiled the upgraded P41/1 road (R42) near Nigel, in Ekurhuleni.  The rehabilitation project was undertaken at a cost of R16 million.

The road has historically serviced the coal haulage sector in the province. It is expected to play a critical role in servicing the rail manufacturing industry as part of the Gauteng Provincial Government’s re-industrialisation strategy.

Rehabilitating the route is also expected to improve links between Nigel and Springs as well as the N3 to Durban/Johannesburg in Heidelberg.

Speaking at the event, MEC Vadi said “the upgraded road improves the link between Nigel/Springs and the N3, and provides direct access to the newly-developed Gibela rail manufacturing factory at Dunnotar that is scheduled to be opened later this year”.

He emphasised that the “upgraded road is a cost-effective facility for road users to travel in safety and comfort, which will facilitate ease of movement, particularly to the Gibela rail manufacturing factory”.

The project, completed on budget and on time, restored the road for a further lifespan of fifteen years. It also empowered local black-owned enterprises contracted during the reconstruction process.

Road works entailed resurfacing, repairing of edge breaks, clearing drainage systems and installing new road markings.
