Tambo Springs- Freight hubs to improve movement, efficiencies
Delivering the 2017/18 Departmental Budget Vote in June, MEC Ismail Vadi announced that plans are on track to launch the Tambo-Springs Freight and Logistics Hub in 2018.
The Provincial Government has identified the development of freight infrastructure as key to economic growth, contributing to efficiencies in the freight transport system. These are also expected to play a leading role in the revitalization of Gauteng’s economy whilst providing opportunities for small and emerging companies.
The Tambo-Springs Freight and Logistics Hub is a multi-year project and strategically located along the Gauteng- Free State- KZN corridor. It is located in the southern part of Johannesburg, approximately 22 kilometres from the City Deep Terminal and 25 kilometres from the OR Tambo Air Freight Terminal. The hub aims to increase efficiencies and decrease costs of containerised cargo moving in and out of the province.

It has access to important road networks including the N3 freeway to Durban; the N1 to Cape Town; and via the R390 to Port Elizabeth and East London as well as to industrial centres in Johannesburg and Ekurhuleni. Road network analysis and the realignment of the PWV15 is also being finalised.

The PWV15 is a planned 35 kilometre north-south corridor from Kempton Park, crossing over the N17 and N3 linking with the K146 (Rivett –Carnett Road) near Zonkizizwe, Katlehong.

In a bid to stimulate economic growth and creating job opportunities, the Department has plans for the development of logistic hubs in parts of the province including Sedibeng and West Rand.

Meanwhile, the Gauteng Provincial Department has developed a Provincial Freight Databank to ensure freight systems are efficiently and effectively planned. The databank serves to gather current modal distribution of inter and intra-provincial freight movement, industry trends and identifying imbalances of directional freight flow taking place in a single system.
